What to do when a product is missing in store?
In shortCheck that it hasn't simply been moved along the shelf, ask for the stockroom if a member of staff is around, and above all report the gap to the store: without a report, the empty shelf stays invisible to them. With ShelfAlert, that report takes two seconds from your phone.
The shelf is empty, the product isn’t there: now what?
You had that product on your list. It isn’t there. The space is empty, or taken up by something else. You have four options, and only one of them actually helps the store.
1. Look around
A product may have been moved by another shopper or put back in the wrong place during restocking. A glance at the neighbouring shelves is sometimes enough. If the shelf label is still there with its price, this is the product’s place, and it really is missing.
2. Ask for the stockroom
If a member of staff is available, they can check the stockroom. It often works, but it is rarely possible: at busy times nobody is on the shop floor, and many shoppers don’t like to bother anyone.
3. Take a substitute, or leave
That is what most shoppers do. Another brand, another size, or nothing at all. For the store, that lost sale shows up nowhere: the stock system says the product is in stock, and the till doesn’t see what wasn’t bought.
4. Report the gap
This is the only option that leaves a trace. A report tells the store: this product, in this place, at this time, was missing. Repeated by several shoppers, it becomes valuable information: this product is in demand, it needs restocking, and perhaps ordering in larger quantities.
Why the store doesn’t already know
A store tracks its stock through sales and stock counts. But between the stock in the back and the product on the shelf there is restocking, which depends on how much time the team has. A product can be “in stock” in the system and absent from the shelf for hours, sometimes days. That is called an on-shelf availability gap, as opposed to a stockout. It is the most frequent kind, and the least visible.
How to report in two seconds
With ShelfAlert, there is nothing to install. Open shelfalert.io/signaler in your phone’s browser, or scan the ShelfAlert QR code if the store displays one.
- Scan the barcode of an identical product next to it, or the shelf label (electronic or paper).
- If nothing can be read, take a photo: the product is identified automatically.
- Confirm. The store manager, if they subscribe, receives your report in real time.
The more a product is reported, the higher it climbs in the store’s list of most-requested products. You don’t need an account to report; creating one lets you follow your reports.
